[The following Tale was found among the papers of the late Diedrich Knickerbocker, an old gentleman of New York, who was very curious in the Dutch history of the province, and the manners of the descendants from its primitive settlers. His historical researches, however, did not lie so Diedrich Knickerbocker is an old man from New York who is interested in Dutch history culture. As the story begins, he has died and the story of Rip Van Winkle is found in his documents. It is set in a backward village dwelled between the Catskill Mountains. The village was founded by Dutch settlers. Rip is settled in that village.
